Located
in northern Italy, the Lake
District is an ideal destination for visitors seeking
to enjoy natural beauty, historic sights, water activities,
and delicious regional cuisine.
Lake
Como, in the Lombardy Region, is a long and narrow lake in
the form of a wishbone with the towns of Como and Lecco at
the southern end. Narrow winding roads hug the hillside along
the lake and connect lovely lakeside towns. There is also
an extensive ferry service which crisscrosses the lake.
Explore
lakeside towns such as Varenna, Menaggio, and Bellagio and
visit elegant villas such as Villa Carlotta which line the
lake. With the Alps as a backdrop, there are spectacular views
of the lake, elegant villas, and small towns along the lakeshore
from many points on and around Lake Como.
Lake
Garda, the largest and easternmost of the lakes, borders the
regions of Lombardy, Veneto , and Trentino. Most places around
the lake are easily accessible by car, but the best views
of the elegant villas and gardens along Lake Garda can be
seen by boat. Visit the lovely town of Sirminone with its
Medieval Castle which is located at the tip of a narrow peninsula
on the southern end of the lake.
The
beautiful city of Verona, the setting of Shakespeare's famous
play Romeo and Juliet, is short drive from Lake Garda. Visit
the colorful market in Piazza Erba, the church of San Zeno
Maggiore, and the enormous Roman Arena in the historic heart
of Verona.
