ABOUT ITALY Italy is located in southern Europe in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea. This boot-shaped peninsula is divided from the rest of the continent by the Alps, which stretch across the northern part of the country. Italy borders with France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia to the north. The country has two large islands, Sardegna and Sicilia, as well as a number of smaller islands off of Italy’s long coastline. Italy is divided into 20 regions. Each region is unique and has its on history, culture, food and wine. Italian regions are divided into provinces, which are then divided into smaller municipalities. Standard Italian is the official language of the country, but each region has its own dialect, with variations within each region. Location is an important factor to consider when choosing where to go on your Italian Vacation. From the alpine north to the colorful south, each region is different and has something special to offer. There is much diversity from region to region and even within a particular region. Even the smallest of villages has something unique to discover and experience. |
